Mind Guide

The Mind Guide study is investigating how mobile phone accessible programs help post-9/11 veterans manage stress and alcohol use.

We’ll ask you to use an app on your phone or a mobile-accessible website. From your participation in this study, we hope to learn how the apps and websites can help reduce stress and alcohol use among the veterans who use these programs online.

This research is being run by researchers at the University of Southern California.

Why is this study being done?

The purpose of this study is to examine how mobile phone accessible programs help post-9/11 veterans manage stress and alcohol use.

Is this study for me?

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Discharged from military service from the Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, or Navy
  • Not currently affiliated with active duty service or in the reserves or guard units
  • 18+ years old
  • Able to read English (also a requirement of military service)
  • Own a personal smartphone with Internet access and have interest in using apps on that phone

This screening survey will help us determine your eligibility for the study. If you are eligible and get enrolled in the study, you will have the opportunity to complete all portions of the study.

What will happen if I participate in this study?

This study involves completing five online surveys and completing a program on your phone for 8 weeks. All procedures will be online and confidential.

You will be randomized (like flipping a coin) to either download an app onto your mobile phone or use a mobile-friendly website. We ask that you use the app or website for a period of 8 weeks. There are some modules in each of the programs and your use of the program could take you just a few minutes per day or longer if you want.

We will ask you to fill out five brief online surveys throughout the course of this study: at the beginning of the study and then at 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks later. You can do these on your phone or a computer.

Will I be paid for being in this study?

You will be compensated for all aspects of this study. You will receive a $20 gift card of your choosing (e.g., Target, Amazon, Starbucks) for the survey you complete at the study beginning and an additional $20 for each of the four follow-up surveys (additional $80 gift cards).

Total compensation for completing all aspects of the study: $100 in gift cards.

Will it cost me anything to be in this study?

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
