BRAVE

The BRAVE study is testing an online intervention to assist post-9/11 veterans with alcohol use and mental health concerns.

This study will test the efficacy of an online intervention developed by our team and evaluated in a successful pilot study to prevent alcohol misuse among young veterans. During this study, you will be asked to view a website and fill out brief surveys on your phone or computer.

Participating in this research study will help researchers improve the online intervention program. Your participation may also help improve treatment approaches for veterans to help manage alcohol use.

Why is this study being done?

The purpose of this research is to evaluate how an online intervention helps veterans manage their alcohol use and mental health concerns.

Is this study for me?

You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Separated or discharged from U.S. military service (Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Navy, or Coast Guard)
  • Served in the military during or after 9/11/01
  • 18-40 years old
  • Access to a computer, Internet, and personal email address
  • Drink alcohol
  • Not currently receiving treatment for mental health or substance use concerns

This screening survey will help us determine your eligibility for the study. If you are eligible and get enrolled in the study, you will have the opportunity to complete all portions of the study.

What will happen if I participate in this study?

This study involves viewing one of two websites on your mobile phone (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two). One contains videos and is interactive, while the other is more text and picture based. We ask you to review all the content on the website you receive. You will also fill out five brief (15 minute) online surveys, each three months apart. You can do these on your phone or computer.

Regardless of the program you are assigned to complete, you will receive a downloadable PDF sheet viewable in a web browser or on your computer that contains a list of resources that are available to you if you choose, where you can talk to someone about reducing drinking or addressing mental health concerns. All research procedures will be completed online with no face-to-face participant contact.

Will I be paid for being in this study?

You will be compensated for all aspects of this study. You will receive a $20 gift card of your choosing (e.g., Target, Amazon, Starbucks) for the survey you complete at the study beginning and an additional $20 for each of the four follow-up surveys (additional $80 gift cards).

Total compensation for completing all aspects of the study: $100 in gift cards.

Will it cost me anything to be in this study?

There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
