The Sip n’ Savor study is testing an online intervention to better understand binge eating and drinking behaviors among college students.
This study will test the efficacy of a brief online intervention to reduce the incidence of both binge eating and binge drinking behaviors among college students. During this study, you will be asked to view a website, fill out brief surveys on your phone or computer, and attend a 30-minute interview over Zoom to talk about your experience.
Participating in this research study will help researchers improve the online intervention program. Your participation may also help improve prevention and intervention approaches for college students to help manage binge eating and drinking behaviors.
Why is this study being done?
The purpose of this research is to evaluate how an online intervention helps college students manage their binge eating and drinking behaviors.
Is this study for me?
You may qualify for this study if you meet the following criteria:
- Full-time undergraduate student at the University of Southern California
- 18-24 years old
- Drink alcohol
- Have had at least two occasions in the last month where you felt like you lost control over how much you were eating
This screening survey will help us determine your eligibility for the study. If you are eligible and get enrolled in the study, you will have the opportunity to complete all portions of the study.
What will happen if I participate in this study?
This study involves viewing one of two websites on your mobile phone (you will be randomly assigned to one of the two). One contains videos and is interactive, while the other is more text and picture based. We ask you to review all the content on the website you receive. You will also fill out two brief (10 minute) online surveys, one prior to viewing the program and one two weeks after viewing the program. You can do these on your phone or computer.
You will also attend one 30-minute Zoom interview with a member of our research team. You will be asked about your use of the program and what you did or did not like about it.
Regardless of the program you are assigned to complete, you will receive a downloadable PDF sheet viewable in a web browser or on your computer that contains a list of resources that are available to you if you choose, where you can talk to someone about reducing drinking or addressing mental health concerns. All research procedures will be completed online.
Will I be paid for being in this study?
You will receive a $50 gift card of your choosing (e.g., Target, Amazon, Starbucks) for completing all aspects of the study (i.e., two brief online surveys, viewing the mobile program, and attending the Zoom interview).
Total compensation for completing all aspects of the study: $50 in gift cards.
Will it cost me anything to be in this study?
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
