
The insomnia coach study is testing an app to improve sleep and manage drinking among veterans.
This study will test the efficacy of a brief online intervention. During this study, you will be asked to fill out an initial survey, view an app or mobile website for 8 weeks, and fill out 4 brief follow-up surveys on your phone or computer once a month for four months.
Participating in this research study will help researchers improve the app. Your participation may also help improve intervention approaches to help improve sleep and manage drinking behaviors among veterans.

Why is this study being done?
The purpose of this research is to evaluate how an online intervention helps veterans students manage drinking behaviors and improve their sleep.
Is this study for me?
You may qualify for this study if you are
- A post 9/11 veteran aged 18 or older
- Drink alcohol
- Have difficulty falling asleep*
This screening survey will help us determine your eligibility for the study. If you are eligible and get enrolled in the study, you will have the opportunity to complete all portions of the study.
*Please note that you are not eligible to participate in this study if you regularly work night shifts.
What will happen if I participate in this study?
This study involves completing five brief surveys and using a mobile app or website for 8 weeks. There is an initial brief survey upon enrollment, then one every four weeks until the conclusion of the study. Your total enrollment time for the study is approximately 5 months.
After the initial survey, You will be randomly assigned (i.e., like flipping a coin) to one of two conditions: (a) download an app onto your mobile phone or (b) use a mobile-friendly website to look at for a few minutes a day.
Regardless of the program you are assigned to complete, you will receive a downloadable PDF sheet viewable in a web browser or on your computer that contains a list of resources that are available to you, if you choose, where you can talk to someone about reducing drinking or addressing mental health concerns. All research procedures will be completed online with no face-to-face participant contact.
Will I be paid for being in this study?
You will receive a $20 gift e-gift card of your choosing (e.g., Target, Amazon, Starbucks) for each survey you complete.
Total compensation for completing all aspects of the study: $100 in gift cards.
Will it cost me anything to be in this study?
There is no cost for you to participate in our research study.
